What is the course about?
Masterclass in Periodontal Disease treatment and management is a course aimed at dentist, dental hygienist/therapist to enable them to carry out non-surgical periodontal treatment successfully in primary care settings (general practice). It is a 3 day course which will have all components of phase 1, 2 & 3 (please see below). This is particularly useful for someone who wants to learn everything at once or who lives far away and commuting to 3 different days and venues might be particularly challenging.

Phase One
Day 1 – Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy – What is stopping you from getting that good result?
Description:
The course will provide the dental professionals with a comprehensive knowledge on the management of periodontal disease using Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy within primary care setting and on achieving good success rate. It will also look at science/evidence behind the use and recommendation of each of products/process we discuss, where available. We will discuss on how to plan the treatment so that you can execute it well in clinical settings. Course will also cover comprehensive record keeping, communication skills, discussing treatment plans, gaining valid consent, litigation surrounding periodontal disease and recent GDC cases and evidence submitted in these cases.
Aim:
To be able diagnose, treatment plan and execute NSPT to achieve good results in primary care settings.
Objectives
The speaker will:
- Outline current understanding of the aetiology, progression and treatment of periodontal disease
- Discuss the evidence behind the use of various oral hygiene products and its effectiveness in non-surgical periodontal therapy hygiene phase, where available.
- Demonstrate how to diagnose and classify periodontal disease using 2017 Classification, construct a treatment plan following S3 Treatment Protocol (2021), gain consent and keep comprehensive records
- Explain the objectives of non-surgical periodontal therapy and the stages of wound healing
- Clarify when and how to offer referral for specialist care.
Anticipated Learning Outcomes:
Following the session, the delegates will be able to:
- Assess the patients in detail, perform necessary examinations (within your own scope of practice) and be able to make right diagnosis.
- Aid the motivation and instruct patients in improving their oral hygiene
- Classify and diagnose periodontal disease following New 2017 Classification.
- Recognise the need for periodontal treatment and to be able to offer specialist care when needed
- Formulate a treatment plan tailored to each patient (following S3 Treatment Guidelines), gain consent and be able to keep detailed, contemporaneous notes

Phase Two
Day 2: Treating and Maintaining Periodontal Disease – Complete Instrumentation Hands-on Course
Description:
It is a complete periodontal instrumentation day that will look at how to plan and manage periodontal treatment following non-surgical procedure and the effective instrumentation skills and techniques to achieve successful outcome. We will also look at the science & evidence behind the design, use and recommendation of each of products/process we discuss. There will be brief discussion on how to plan the treatment so that you can execute it well in clinical settings. Hence it will give you a complete understanding and knowledge behind best use of ultrasonic scalers, hand instruments and air polishing and finer practical skills for NSPT.
Aim:
To learn and refine instrumentation skills to carry out successful non-surgical periodontal therapy.
Objectives:
The speaker will:
- Refresh dental professional’s knowledge on planning and the management of periodontal disease using non-surgical approach.
- Shed light on how to use site specific Gracey curettes during non-surgical periodontal treatment and the effective techniques for root surface debridement.
- Discuss various air polishing powders, their physical properties and how to use them in clinical settings for both cosmetic stain removal and during periodontal maintenance.
- Provide hands on demonstration with ultrasonic scalers (Peizoelectric & magnetostrictive scalers), hand instrumentation (Graceys & universals) and air-polishing (supra and sub gingival for cosmetic and periodontal treatment/maintenance) in order to improve their periodontal instrumentation skills.
- Demonstrate how to sharpen hand instruments.
Anticipated Learning Outcomes:
Following the session, the delegates will be able to:
- Differentiate between magnetostrictive and piezoelectric scalers and their working mechanisms
- Use USS, hand instruments and air-polish confidently and be able to carry out non-surgical treatment effectively
- Be able to implement skills learned from both lecture and demonstration (Hands on).

- Choose right instruments (appropriate hand instruments and ultrasonic tips for supra and sub-gingival areas) and materials for periodontal treatment and maintenance
- Distinguish between different uss types, tips, hand instruments (gracey/universal scaler) and polishing powders and be able to use various phase of periodontal treatments/cosmetic treatments
- Enhance periodontal treatment skills (hands on) using USS, hand instruments and air polishing

Phase Three
Day 3: Periodontal & Implant Maintenance, Implementing Ideas (practice protocols and training your team around you) and Profitable Periodontics
Description:
This day we will look at rationale for periodontal maintenance and implant maintenance in greater detail, evidence behind various procedures, instruments and materials we can use. We will discuss various care plan pathways, guide you on how to create periodontal protocol for your practice for treatment and internal/external referral, implementing care plan for each patient, how to train various members of dental team so that all of us can support each other. We will look at difference between ethical and unethical selling, how to work more effectively & efficiently and how you can be clinically as well as financially successful completing periodontal treatment.
Aims:
- To maintain implant and periodontal health following periodontal treatment
- To promote positive and constructive dialogue among colleagues in dental practice to provide best periodontal care.
Objectives:
The speaker will:
- Discuss importance of periodontal treatment and maintenance and appreciate the evidence behind such treatments.
- Discuss current periodontal and implant maintenance protocols and implement them in practice.
- Discuss common materials and equipment used for periodontal & implant maintenance in general practice.

- Set up practice protocol and how to create effective internal/external referral procedures within practice.
