Aims: 

 To discuss the importance of comprehensive clinical examination and diagnosing
dental disease within competence.
 To enhance knowledge, understanding and competence on record keeping in
accordance with best practice guidance.
Objectives:
The speaker will:
 Discuss FGDP guidelines in relation to clinical examination, history taking and
record keeping.
 Discuss dental hygienists and therapists SOP and their role in carrying out
clinical examinations
 Discuss fundamental requirements of good record keeping for both ethical and
legal purposes and in effective patient management

Anticipated Learning Outcomes: 

Following the session, the delegates will be able to:
 Explain the importance of and carry out an appropriate systematic intra- and
extra-oral clinical examination
 Utilise relevant special investigations and diagnostic procedures, including
radiography, pulp testing (thermal/ electrical/ pressure) et
 Describe the importance of and record a comprehensive and contemporaneous
patient history
 Appreciate the need for and make arrangements for appropriate follow-up care
 Maintain contemporaneous, complete and accurate patient records in
accordance with legal requirements and best practice

Speaker’s Profile

Bev Littlemore

BSc (Hons) PGDip PGCert DipHE Hyg & Therapy Cert HE FAETC FHEA
Course Lead and Senior Lecturer in Dental Hygiene & Dental Therapy, University of Central Lancashire

Bev is a Senior Lecturer and Course Lead for the BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Therapy at the University of Central Lancashire. 

Having worked in dentistry for over 25 years Bev is passionate about furthering the development of Dental Care Professionals. Bev has worked in general practice, maxillo-facial and orthodontic settings, community and in public health and has been teaching for over 15 years. 

Bev graduated with a Combined Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy (with Distinction) from Liverpool University. She has since achieved a BSc (Hons) in Dental Studies (1st class) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management. She has completed her PG Cert in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education to achieve Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. She is currently studying for an MSc in Advanced Restorative and Periodontal Practice with UCLan. 

Alongside her teaching commitments, Bev is also an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons. 

Bev is our solo tutor on Prescribing Radiographs for Dental Hygienist Therapist course.
