BSc in Oral Health 2007 (Dundee
I qualified from University of Dundee (2007) with BSc in Oral Health and registered as dental hygienist/therapist. After being qualified, I joined a large NHS Dental practice in west London where I learned basic dentistry as well as patient centred care and team working. However, I was not very happy with my periodontal treatment outcomes. Most of my patients used to end up with specialist for non-surgical periodontal treatment.
After 3 years, I decided I had to get out of my comfort zone and start learning further. I hand-picked practices which will allow me time, space and training to master my techniques. In this process, I worked in specialist referral practice alongside periodontal and restorative consultants as well as in Aberdeen Dental Hospital (Restorative Department). Since then, I enjoy treating periodontal patients following non-surgical protocol and I very rarely refer them to specialist (mostly surgical procedures only).
To broaden my knowledge and skills, I joined Masters in Advance Periodontal Practice at University of Essex in 2015. Until now, this is the only course which allows DCPs to train alongside dentists in Clinical Masters Programme and I was selected as one of the students in first cohort of students. Apart from structured academic training, I also attend national and international seminars, conferences and numerous Continual Professional Development (CPD) courses to keep learning and improving in all aspects of dentistry.
Apart from working part time (3 day per week) and studying for Master Degree, I also run CPD courses for dental team on various topics. My favourite topic is periodontal disease and its management following non-surgical approach, however I have been known to talk about team building, ethical selling, profitable periodontics, interview techniques and other topic related to dental hygiene and therapy profession. In last 2 years, I have designed and delivered 35 full day CPD events totalling to 230 hours all around the UK, presented in regional and national conferences (BSDHT 2016, Dentistry Show Oct 2015), delivered periodontal diagnosis lecture to group of more than 100 dentists ( My Dentist Clinical Conference 2016). I also run smaller in-house training to dental practices on periodontal treatment (diagnosis, treatment planning, setting up protocol, treatment execution etc.)
I am a full member of BADT, BSDHT and BSP and support them whole heartedly. However I am of the view that BSDHT and BADT should merge and form a bigger society so that our voice is stronger and future is brighter.
Recently I organised and took part in Oral Health for Developing Countries Nepal 2016 charity event. I gathered 7 dental professional (hygienist, therapist, dentist) from the UK and 12 professionals (Orthodontist, dentist, hygienist, dental student, and receptionist) from the Nepal. We managed to screen more than 1200 school children, provided full check-ups, restorative, periodontal and general surgery treatment. I already got plans to organise something similar in 2017.
Currently I am raising funds to set up computer laboratory (computers and projector) for the same school and we on the process to hand it over by January 2017.
I sometimes write in national journals about the changes we need to bring in our profession, periodontology and its implementation. In my free time, I like to travel and watch Chelsea FC play at home.
