What is masterclass in periodontal disease?

Masterclass in Periodontal Disease treatment and management is a course aimed at dentist, dental hygienist/therapist to enable them to carry out non-surgical periodontal treatment successfully in primary care settings (general practice). It is a 3 day course which will have all components of phase 1, 2 & 3 (please see below). This is particularly useful for someone who wants to learn everything at once or who lives far away and commuting to 3 different days and venues might be particularly challenging.

Course fee is £300 for 3 days. Individual booking for day 1 and day 3 will be £85/ day and day 2 (hands on) will be £175.

Phase one (day 1)

The aim of this course is to provide dental professionals with a  comprehensive knowledge on the management of periodontal disease using non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) within a primary setting and achieving a good success rate.

This course is mainly lecture based and it focuses on ….

  • Comprehensive discussion on all things related to NSPT:
  • Aetiology, progression and treatment options
  • Evidence behind everything we say and do
  • Diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Communication with patient – how to explain disease in simple terms, how to discuss treatment plans and costs
  • Obtaining consent , writing comprehensive notes and follow up notes
  • The actual “big day” planning and what happens on the day !
  • Successful treatment outcome – what plays the part
  • Instrument selection
  • Review and follow ups
  • Measuring success
  • Managing failures
  • When / how / where to refer
  • Case studies
  • GDC cases
  • And many more !!

Phase two (day 2)

It’s is complete periodontal instrumentation day that will look at how to plan and manage periodontal treatment following non-surgical procedure. I believe doing things in steps, following a systemic method so that likelihood of making or omitting something is less. I believe keeping things simple yet effective. So I would say our course will look at simplifying the treatment process and doing the basics in most effective way.

We will start at where we left at phase 1 – “what’s stopping you from getting that good results?” and discuss how you plan a complete treatment phases and execute it in steps. ( if you have not attend phase 1, please consider attending one if you can. Even if you have not, I will make sure you don’t feel lost or know where/why/how we planning treatment).

We will plan treatment in phases (hygiene phase, non-surgical periodontal phase, supportive therapy phase and maintenance phase) and discuss how/why particular instrument might be best for that treatment. Exactly like how I practice ( no hidden secrets , no “we will cover that in next phase!”), I’ll share my knowledge , experience and techniques without holding it back ( I call it leading Deepak’s style and who have attended phase 1 are familiar with it!). Hence there will be huge discussion/demo on use of ultrasonic scalers, some/enough discussion/demo on hand instruments and on air polishing. We will look at science/evidence behind the make, use and recommendation behind some of the products we discuss.

I will try to keep things simple, straight forward yet most effective. This is why I choose to call it “complete periodontal instrumentation” rather than “advance or master class” on periodontal instrumentation hands on.

I am also working with dental industry to support us on the day you will have complete and enjoyable day.

Phase 3 (day 3)

This day we will look at rationale for periodontal maintenance in greater detail, evidence behind various procedures, instruments and materials we can use. We will discuss various care plan pathway, creating and implementing periodontal protocol 9 for both internal/external referral, implementing care plan for each patient etc), how to train various members of dental team so that all of us can support each other. We will look at difference between ethical and unethical selling, how to work smarter rather than harder and how you can be clinically as well as financially successful completing periodontal treatment.

PERIO … 3 full days of non stop perio talk, taking over your whole weekend !

“Sounds like the worst weekend ever right? what on earth did i sign myself up for ! what was I thinking !

I woke up Friday morning thinking the next three days I’m going to spend sat down trying not to fall asleep whilst someone lectures me on all the things i’ve done wrong since qualifying. I couldn’t have been further away from the truth.

I’ve spent the last 3 days on Deepak Simkhada Perio Master Class, and loved every minute of it. I would recommended it to everyone, and if you’re considering booking the course, make sure you drag your dentists/principles along too!

I’m the sort of person who falls asleep during a CPD course, however I didn’t even find myself day dreaming once. I’ve learnt so much over the past couple of days and also built confidence knowing the treatment I’m providing for my patients. Theres a few things to improve on and I’ve learnt how I can implement these into my practice.

For anyone that hasn’t been on periodontal masterclass, you don’t know what your missing out on!

I would like to give a massive thank you to Deepak Simkhada, Maggie Jackson, and the reps that joined us over the weekend for an eyeopening fun filled 3 days. “

“If anyone is considering doing one of Deepak’s courses, do not hesitate! You won’t find a more engaging speaker, who speaks with knowledge and humour. Incredibly relatable and informative with high quality handouts, and…we got PIZZA for lunch ‪😜

‪Thank you Deepak x”
